St. Peter Sends St. Mark to Preach in Aquileia

Circa 1180

Crypt of Aquileia Basilica

Sitting on a curule chair beside a stylized representation of the Eternal City, St. Peter hands his disciple a crozier. This gesture is repeated in the nearby fresco depicting his commissioning of St. Hermagoras. Unlike Mark, Peter is not labeled, nor does he hold his usual pair of keys.

According to Tavano (197), opinions range widely as to when in the 12th century the crypt frescos should be dated, but most agree on a date around 1180.
